Microneedling FAQs
How long does a medical microneedling treatment take?
Expect to spend about 90 minutes at our Kitchener clinic for a medical microneedling (CIT) treatment. The process begins with the application of a topical anesthetic for 30 minutes, followed by the procedure using either a roller or eDermaStamp. The session concludes with a soothing and hydrating hyaluronic acid mask.
Is a microneedling treatment painful?
Medical microneedling treatments may cause mild to moderate discomfort. However, the use of topical anesthesia prior to the treatment ensures greater comfort during the procedure. The DERMAROLLER® home system can be used safely at home with little to no discomfort and does not require topical anesthetics.
How many medical microneedling treatments will I need and when will I see results?
For optimal results, 3-6 treatments are recommended, spaced at least 2 months apart to allow for collagen maturation. Initial results may be visible one week after treatment, with more noticeable improvements appearing around 6 weeks later. Your skin can continue to enhance for up to 6 months post-treatment.
Are there any side effects or complications from medical microneedling treatments?
Microneedling treatments have a very low potential for complications. The DERMAROLLER® CIT system is approved for safe use by both Health Canada and the FDA. Unlike laser treatments, which can cause burn injuries and associated adverse effects, microneedling provides minimally invasive mechanical wounds to the skin. Although there's a small risk of infection whenever the skin is broken, we use clean and sterile procedures to prevent contamination, with a new roller or eDermaStamp cartridge for every patient and treatment. Hyperpigmentation may occur with aggressive eDermaStamp treatments.
How will I look and feel after my treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, your skin will appear red and feel warm, similar to a sunburn. Swelling may develop a few hours later, typically subsiding within a couple of days, although more aggressive treatments may require slightly longer recovery times. Detailed post-treatment instructions will be provided to ensure the proper care of your skin.
Can anyone have a medical microneedling treatment?
Certain conditions may contraindicate treatment. These include a history of hypertrophic or keloid scars, skin cancer, recent oral steroid use, recent laser resurfacing or skin peel, chemotherapy or radiation, pregnancy or breastfeeding, active herpes simplex (cold sores), and active acne. Discuss any of these conditions during your consultation.
Can I use my regular skin care products after my treatment?
Not all skincare products are suitable for post-treatment skin, and certain ingredients are essential to ensure optimal results. To support your treatment outcomes, we offer patients the opportunity to purchase a customized, medical-grade SKINMEDICA® package at a discounted rate when a microneedling package is purchased.
How can I maintain my results?
Most people can maintain their results with a treatment every 9-12 months. Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and poor sleep habits can negatively impact maintenance. Using the DERMAROLLER® home system requires minimal time and effort and can help enhance the effectiveness and longevity of your medical microneedling treatments.
