Things To DO
POST-Operative Care Checklist
At TBT Clinic, we provide online patient forms for your convenience. You can download the required form(s), fill in the necessary information, and then fax, email, or bring them with you to your appointment.
- Your First 24 Hours: If you're heading home, ensure a friend or family member drives you, as you'll be under heavy sedation. It's crucial to have someone with you for the first 24 hours post-surgery. For any questions about these instructions, please consult our nursing staff.
- Activity: Take it easy and focus on self-care. Avoid strenuous activities like cleaning or attic organization. Rest, use the bathroom, and watch TV as needed, but refrain from activities that could lead to bleeding, swelling, or bruising.
- Ice Packs: Use cold packs or ice to reduce swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Frozen peas or crushed ice in a zip-lock bag work well. If ice feels too intense, reduce its use accordingly.
- Diet: If you experience post-operative nausea, try carbonated sodas or dry crackers to settle your stomach. For severe nausea, consider using a suppository. Start with liquids and bland foods, progressing to a regular diet as tolerated.
- Smoking: Avoid smoking entirely during the first 10 days after surgery as it restricts blood flow to the skin.
- Alcohol: Refrain from alcohol consumption until you've finished taking prescription pain medication. The combination of pain pills and alcohol can be dangerous due to increased drowsiness and other side effects.
- Driving: Do not drive for at least 2 days after general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, or while taking prescription pain medication.
- Post-Operative Appointments: Follow the schedule of appointments we set up after your surgery to ensure your recovery progresses smoothly.
